Hello Friend,
We are unbelievably grateful to hit a new milestone on the farm.... The opening of our entire farm store!
As the photo shows, the building was in a state of neglect, disrepair, vine growing in through every crack in the brick, busting through glass windows and crushing old wood framing. Home to chimney sweeps, field mice and black rat snakes, we slowly started reclaiming the building from the encroaching wildlife...using sheep and goats as our poison ivy removal team!
Our first goal was to open our rustic farm store to the public in May 2019, just a month before little Samuel was due to be born!
Sweat equity and passion got us thought the first hurdle.
But first let's learn a little history of the property... Our farmstead is locally known as Castle Carberry.
It's an original Borden land grant, first purchased in 1742. It has been home to Doctors, Ministers and Farmers alike. With renters since the 1970's and no permanent residents or farmers living on the property, until we moved in.
When we bought the farm, we were told that our farm store was a school house.
Later we found out that it was actually a former slave dwelling. Since then extensive research has been done at the Brownsburg Museum, W&L special collections and W&L students as well as the Historic Foundation of Lexington. Be sure to stop by the new Brownsburg Museum Exhibit when you come to the farm!
We are the first family of farmers to earn ALL of our income from farming in several generations of the property's history.
That is RARE statistic(blessing) in modern farming.
Our vision has always centered on being a farm that nourishes our community with clean nutrient dense foods and being farmers that inspire, encourage and educate.
The farm store is where this happens on a personal level each and every weekend.
Our newly expanded store + new hours and our upcoming Seasonal U-Pick Offerings: strawberries, wildflowers, Melons, Pumpkins and more!
Will allow both John and I to continue to work as full time farmers and continue to improve the land and quality of produce and proteins that we bring to your table.
This summer will mark our first season of Pick Your Own: Fruits, Herbs, Veggies and Wildflowers!
This weekend we are pulling out fence and tapping off ground to prep new ground for this adventure!
We cannot wait to get it planted, have it bloom, fruit and yield glorious experiences for our eaters to get their hands in the dirt, to eat from the vine, be in nature and connect to the land their food is grown on!
Stay tuned for opening dates!!
